Monroe's older housing stock means aging appliances are a common situation. Refrigerators from the nineties that still run but have been replaced. Washers and dryers sitting in the garage long after the new set arrived. Window AC units from a home before central air. A chest freezer in the basement that nobody uses anymore. When it's time to clear them out, you have more options than just calling for pickup — but not every option makes sense for every appliance.
Here's an honest breakdown of your choices, what to consider for each category, and what actually happens when we haul them.
Option 1: Sell It
If the appliance works and is less than 15 years old, it may have resale value. Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist are the right channels for this in Monroe and Union County. Working refrigerators, washers, and dryers in functional shape regularly sell for $75–$200 locally.
Be honest in your listing about age and condition. Be prepared for no-shows and tire-kickers. If the appliance has been sitting unused for a few years, test it before you list it — nothing burns goodwill like someone hauling it across town and finding it doesn't work.
If you have a matching washer/dryer set, list them together. They're worth more as a pair.
Option 2: Donate It
Habitat for Humanity ReStore accepts working appliances — washers, dryers, refrigerators, stoves. This is one of the best options in Monroe for appliances that are functional but not worth the hassle of a private sale. They resell items at reduced prices to people who need them and use the proceeds for their housing programs. Call ahead to confirm they're accepting the category you have.
The Salvation Army also accepts working appliances in some areas. Call your local location to confirm pickup availability for Monroe.
Neither organization accepts non-working appliances, and Habitat ReStore typically won't take appliances older than 10–12 years even if functional. If your appliance doesn't qualify, move to the next option.
Option 3: Curbside Pickup in Monroe / Union County
Union County does offer bulk item and appliance pickup through its solid waste program. The rules and scheduling vary, so check directly with Union County Solid Waste Services for current procedures. Generally you'll need to call ahead or schedule online, and there are rules about what day items can be placed at the curb.
Refrigerant (Freon) — What You Need to Know
Refrigerators, freezers, window AC units, dehumidifiers, and central AC equipment all contain refrigerant. Under the EPA's Section 608 rules, refrigerant must be recovered by certified technicians before the appliance is scrapped or discarded. It cannot be vented to the atmosphere.
We handle Freon-containing appliances properly. When we haul a fridge or AC unit, it goes to a facility equipped to recover refrigerant before the unit is recycled. You don't have to arrange this separately — it's included in the haul.
Electronics and E-Waste
Older TVs (tube-style CRT sets especially), computers, monitors, and small electronics require separate handling and can't go in standard landfill. Union County has e-waste drop-off options through its solid waste facilities — check the Union County Solid Waste website for current locations and accepted items.
If you have a mix of e-waste and appliances to clear, let us know when you call. We can haul standard appliances and coordinate e-waste routing for electronics that require it.
When to Just Call for Pickup
The honest answer: if the appliance is more than 12–15 years old, non-working, or you've already tried to sell or donate it without success — just call. The time and logistics of coordinating a private sale or donation pickup for a $50 item rarely makes sense when weighed against a straightforward haul.
This comes up often during Monroe kitchen renovations, when the old refrigerator, stove, and dishwasher all need to go at once. We can take all three in a single trip and handle them properly.
